Orthodontic Oral Hygiene Instructions
You will notice that it is much harder to keep your teeth clean with braces. Food compacts in the brackets and between your teeth, and can only be removed by brushing and flossing. If plaque remains on the teeth for any length of time, it will leave a permanent white scar on the surface. Follow the three steps below for the best results:
- STEP 1: Use a Waterpik, also known as a water flosser, cleans teeth using a stream of pulsating water to remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria from between teeth and below the gumline.
- STEP 2: Floss between the teeth.
- STEP 3: Use a Sonicare toothbrush – these devices are designed to provide a superior clean compared to manual toothbrushes, leveraging advanced technology to improve oral hygiene and gum health. If using a manual toothbrush, apply a 45-degree angle to the tooth and gum; brush in small circles above and below the brackets. Your toothbrush will wear out faster because of your appliances, so be sure to replace it whenever the bristles start to fray.
