Getting Started

First Visit: Initial Exam

The initial visit serves the purpose of evaluating the nature of the problem, the need for treatment and the timing thereof. There is no charge for this initial screening visit. A clinical examination and study of any available x-rays may lead to the recommendation to do a more in-depth evaluation based on more complete diagnostic records. We also may schedule you for follow-up recall examinations to wait for a more appropriate age for treatment.

We provide this visit as a courtesy to the dentists and their patients in the community who might want to have something checked but may not necessarily be prepared to incur any expense associated with orthodontic treatment.

Diagnostic Records

These consist of x-rays of the teeth and jaws, often a head x-ray as well, facial and dental photographs, and impressions to duplicate the teeth in plaster or on three dimensional computer images. A bite registration is also taken to record the patient’s bite. These records are vital in enabling the doctor to develop the most appropriate treatment plan.

If indicated, and time permits, we can do the above procedures at the first visit. Otherwise a separate appointment may be scheduled. The appointment usually takes about 50 minutes. Any recent dental radiographs from the referring dentist can be helpful, especially for adult patients.

Consultation

After the diagnostic records have been processed and evaluated by the doctor, the treatment coordinator will meet with you to discuss treatment recommendations, proper hygiene and diet, and patient expectations, as well as options for payment.

The doctor will answer any questions or explain additional things. Patients are invited to ask questions, and express any concerns or preferences regarding their treatment plan.
